Slow Commerce at its Best
I came across Labour and Wait a few years back, while I was exploring some of London’s emerging fun neighborhoods, Hoxton and Shoreditch.
It feels like a store that’s already been around for a century, and that’s a big part of its endearing character. The functional, timeless goods sold here range from hardware to clothing; items you actually need, not just stuff that collects dust, and fills your house to the rafters.
Labour and Wait was created by Rachel Wythe-Moran and Simon Watkins, fashion designers who grew frustrated at having to redesign products and ranges every season. The store celebrates the notion of owning something over a long period of time, to see it age beautifully. Its a different kind of commerce, a quiet and more thoughtful approach to today’s fast-paced unbridled consumerism.
I love this store. I don’t buy much there, but what I do find, really counts and gives me joy for years to come.
