Open Your Eyes
21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a design museum created by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake. It opened in 2007 in Roppongi. Surrounded by a small park, its architecture fits in seamlessly with much of the structure expanding below surface.
The idea of this museum is to redirect our eyes and thinking with regards to the role of design in everyday life. The museum’s size is compact. I spent about an hour there, exploring an imaginative exhibit on insects, geared towards adults and kids. The presentations ranged from an insect leg, that was enlarged to fit the height of a room changing our perspective, to recordings of the different communication styles of an ant. Playful larvae eggs were randomly attached to the walls throughout the museum. An incredible amount of care, playfulness and intelligence had gone into creating this unique experience. No matter what 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT presents: GO SEE IT. I bet you won’t be disappointed!
My warmest thank you – domo arigato gozai masu – to the @SuntoryGlobal team, who went above and beyond, introducing me to Japan’s food and drink culture. I’m forever in your debt. #SuntoryTime #SuntoryTimeTour
