The Yarrow
Earlier this year, after extensive travel to arid deserts such as Baja, Mexico and the Chihuahuan Desert in West Texas, I was longing to spend time in the snow. I’ve been a fan of Park City for a few years now, and wanted to come back to see what’s new.
I stayed at The Yarrow, a recently renovated DoubleTree property, just minutes from Park City’s Historic Main Street, where you can find great restaurants (The Eating Establishment), fun bars (No Name Saloon) and cool stores (Prospect & Park City Mercantile). If you want to stay put, Roots Grill back at the hotel will feed you well and the cocktails at Vertical Lounge are damn good, too! I was starting to come down with a cold, so I ordered Vertical’s Ginger Rye Toddy in a last minute attempt to fend it off. Although it didn’t do the trick, and I still got sick, at the very least I was happily, and somewhat deliriously ‘floating’ after my hot toddy, and because of it, felt a little less sorry for myself.
The reason I mention being sick while visiting Park City, is that the good people at The Yarrow genuinely and kindly took care of me, the minute they realized that I’d lost not only my voice, but also my entire energy. Dragging my feet back to my room, after a short walk, I found a ‘get-well’ basket, fully stocked with teas, Emergen-C, and throat lozenges. It’s the kind of gesture I wouldn’t be surprised to see from a super high-end hotel, but not necessarily from a DoubleTree. It didn’t stop there, the kind people at the front desk kept checking in with me, to make sure I was comfortable.
Before coming down with a cold at 7000 feet altitude (not a good combination), I did have some fun, enjoying my mini vacation. The hotel has a fitness center, and a year-round heated outdoor swimming- and whirlpool. The bus stop for the free shuttle to the mountains is right outside the hotel, making it easy to go snow shoeing, or skiing. The Yarrow also has an impressive event space, and takes part of the Sundance Film Festival every year. Which brings me to the fact, that–although I’ve only visited Park City during the snow season, I definitely want to check out the biking and hiking trails in Park City in the summer.
If you’re looking to stay at a nice, clean and affordable hotel in a great location–with wonderful and attentive staff–this is your place. Have fun, and don’t come down with a cold ; )
